What will university education be like ten to fifteen years from now? One Mexican university isn’t waiting to find out. Tecnológico de Monterrey (or Tec Monterrey, as it’s sometimes called) created a division, called Modal Scarf Seagulls by VIDA VIDA hSNd7
, whose task is to both anticipate and create the future of higher education. By keeping tabs on innovations within higher education, Teclabs identifies threats and opportunities in the space. The group uses this information to develop, run, and evaluate pilot programs.

We have learned that is possible to deliver a high-quality education at scale.

Among its projects, Teclabs produces MOOCs for the university. Tec Monterrey has produced 42 courses , for platforms including Coursera, edX, and MexicoX; on subjects spanning business, the humanities, science, and engineering. More courses are in the works and will be released soon.

Class Central recently spoke with Jose Escamilla, Director of Teclabs, and Julien DePauw, who leads MOOC projects for the university. As we learned, MOOCs are not a one-off for Tec Monterrey. Rather, they are part of Teclabs’ integrated effort to prepare for the future of higher education.

Class Central

Our conversation has been edited for length and clarity.

How would you describe what Teclabs does?

Teclabs’ objective is to identify how higher education will be in 2030, whatever it becomes. To that end, we do three things: we observe trends, threats, and opportunities; we carry out projects to figure out what higher education will be like; and we do research to evaluate education projects. We also have internal funding – around $800,000 each year – to fund projects from our faculty. Recently, we launched our first round of funding through our new ed tech accelerator. We think it’s a good idea to take a stake in some innovative companies, especially as the private sector starts trying to disrupt the system.

Teclabs EdTech Accelerator

What can you tell us about your MOOC students?

Since 2013, we have had more than 700,000 students. On Coursera, a majority of our students are women. Also on Coursera, more students are reported as being from Colombia than from Mexico. We’re not sure that these numbers are completely accurate since students don’t have to specify where they are from. However, we do know that most of our students are from Latin America.

One challenge we face is awareness. Another is the credibility of online education. And a third is the price

What do you think are the challenges of working in the MOOC/online learning market in Mexico (or Latin America in general) as compared to the US or overall global market?

As the largest Spanish-speaking country, Mexico is a good market for MOOCs and online learning. One challenge we face is awareness. Another is the credibility of online education. And a third is the price. People who don’t really know much about MOOCs might think that they are completely free. Not everyone knows that, in fact, if you really want a certificate you have to pay something. It’s not a large amount of money, but it can be a barrier. Given that many countries in Latin America are developing countries, people can’t necessarily pay the same amount as in the United States or Europe.

For a start, air is 78% nitrogen anyway, so it’s easy to get hold of. The method is also a surprisingly quick demise. One study from the 1960s found that volunteers Cateye Goldplated Sunglasses one size Linda Farrow c7OaOI51J
lost consciousness in around 17-20 seconds. Based on animal studies, it’s thought that they would have stopped breathing after three seconds.

And due to a quirk of biology it’s apparently painless. That’s because the body can’t actually detect a lack of oxygen – just an excess of carbon dioxide, which acidifies the blood and causes that aching feeling in your legs after exercise. This means it doesn’t feel like suffocation.

So what does it feel like?

John Levinson, a cardiologistand pilot based inBoston,Massachusetts, has some insights. Some years ago he was flying his prized Mooney plane at 23,000 feet (7km) , a height at which the Earth’s atmosphere is thinner and pilots must use supplemental oxygen.

Then he did something risky: he tilted up a corner of his mask and kept breathing. “After about 30 seconds I felt truly weird,” he says. “I didn’t have hallucinations, or pain, or confusion, I just felt weird. It wasn’t like alcohol or any other substance like that.”

The subtle symptoms of hypoxia make it particularly deadly to pilots at high altitude, who may not recognise that anything is wrong. It’s thought to have claimed the life of a man earlier this year, who appeared unconscious in his small plane before going missing over the Gulf of Mexico.

“When it comes to execution, I think people need to understand that the death penalty is not a humane act.” - Robert Dunham (Credit: Getty Images)

In Levinson’s case, he was flying with his instructor, who would have brought the plane down safely in the event that he passed out. The idea was to get a sense of what hypoxia is like, so that he could recognise when it was happening in the future. Years later, while flying with his wife, he started to get the same weird feeling. He recognised it immediately and fixed a kink in his oxygen line before anyone got hurt.

Three US States have now authorised the method as a back-up. But is this just another mistake?

No pharmaceutical company wants its drugs used to kill people

Robert Dunham, a litigator and the Executive Director of theDeath Penalty Information Center, certainly thinks so. “The American Veterinary Medical Association and World Animal Protection both say that nitrogen hypoxia is inappropriate for veterinary euthanasia,” he says. “It’s not quick as has been advertised – cats and dogs are aware of their impending death before they lose consciousness and it takes at least seven minutes to put to death a pig.”

One of the primary issues is that the method relies on the cooperation of the prisoner: if they hold their breath, or their breathing is too shallow, it might take much longer to kill them. “I understand, of course, the theory behind it, that suggests it would be a humane method,” says McCracken. “But that is a far cry from how it would actually be performed in an execution chamber.”

How can you put data to work for you? Specifically, how can numbers in a spreadsheet tell us about present and past business activities, and how can we use them to forecast the future? The answer is in building quantitative models, and this course is designed to help you understand the fundamentals of this critical, foundational, business skill. Through a series of short lectures, demonstrations, and assignments, you’ll learn the key ideas and process of quantitative modeling so that you can begin to create your own models for your own business or enterprise. By the end of this course, you will have seen a variety of practical commonly used quantitative models as well as the building blocks that will allow you to start structuring your own models. These building blocks will be put to use in the other courses in this Specialization.

Course is having ultimate content regarding the understanding of Quantitative modeling and its applications. Having great explanation with examples of linear, power, exponential and log functions.

By NM Jul 23rd 2017

Very good background to quantitative modelling. It gets a bit heavy on the mathematical formulas in places, but if you follow through, it helps cement understanding. Good speed/pace of material.
